The Birkebeinerløpet is a 21 km long trail run in Lillehammer, inspired by the ski race Birkebeinerrennet. It was first held in 1998 and has since grown in popularity, with more participants each year. The race starts at Birkebeineren Ski Stadium and finishes at Håkons Hall, and has been moved from September to June since 2013. The terrain and the profile of the course mean that the achievement of completing the race can be equated with both a marathon and an ultramarathon.

Highlights

  • The Birkebeiner Race has received the green light from local and national health authorities to proceed with the event, allowing for a participant limit of up to 5,000.
  • The first Birkebeiner Race in 1998 gathered 1,442 participants, and the interest in the race has grown every year since.
  • Marthe Katrine Myhre is one of the favorites to win the race this year, after having been sidelined by injury.
