The Halddemarsjen is a traditional hiking march and uphill race that takes place annually at the end of August. The march starts in Kåfjord, 15 km south of Alta, and goes up to the now-closed northern lights observatory at Halddetoppen, 907 meters above sea level. Participants can choose between a hiking class and a competition class, and the march follows a relatively good cart road to the top, about 9 km. The average incline is 10%, but in the last kilometer, it rises by 20%, and hikers should plan for a minimum of 2-3 hours for the ascent.
